1983 is the seminal debut studio album by American electronic producer Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison), originally released on October 3, 2006, via Plug Research. Named after his birth year, the album was recorded mostly in his grandmother’s bedroom and is widely credited with helping define the emerging Los Angeles beat scene. Musically, it blends abstract hip-hop, IDM, jazz, and distinct Brazilian syncopation heavily inspired by a trip to Copacabana.
