Moanin' by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers is widely considered the definitive hard bop jazz recording of all time. Recorded by legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder on October 30, 1958, and released in early 1959, this landmark Blue Note Records album features an iconic line-up including Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. Originally self-titled, the album was renamed Moanin' due to the immediate popularity of its soulful, bluesy opening track composed by Timmons.
